While all around us, the older parts of the economy are at best staggering along-auto, real estate, whatever-there is a new economy that is being born. A surprising amount of it comes from the ecological movement and its principles: use less or use more but more efficiently. Some of it comes out of necessity: the old ways aren't working well as they used to, but the needs they supplied still exist. This page and the links supplied are just the first steps toward what by 2024 could be an entire new economy based on resuse, recycle and renewal. Renewable energy from wind, solar, waves. Energy from trash and biological waste-no more waiting for a massive dinosaur die-off for sources of carbon. Energy that no longer has a long supply chain of tankers, railroad cars. A new agriculture where everybody can be a farmer, meaning that America and the world no longer has to depend on transporting food for miles simply to feed millions. of imported food to feed billions-the urban farming movement. There are new ways of building homes using recycled materials, that integrate power generation and food production. New ways of creating goods and services through using what's leftover. Reclaiming cities. For me, it started with urban farming. Where I live we have a garden (mostly herbs and flowers), I live near an old apple tree. I live in a recycled building. What I have found is that good things can come from old if we just take a second look. The general trend is towards recycling, renewing, greater efficiency in general. |
